A new partnership between the Research Triangle Foundation (RTF) and Sigma Xi brings greater collaboration and exposure for STEM mentorship and scientific programming across Research Triangle Park.

Did you know that Sigma Xi, the world’s largest honor society for scientists and engineers, is located in RTP? They’re building is located directly across the street from The Frontier, and they’ve recently had some exciting changes. They recently welcomed Jamie Vernon as their new Executive Director and CEO.  With new leadership and their established headquarters in RTP, we’ve been collaborating with Sigma Xi to promote a variety of programming like STEM in the Park and the upcoming Sigma Xi Symposium on Atmospheric Chemistry, Climate, and Health and Student Research Conference. With so many smart people in RTP, programs like these help provide a variety of ways for employees across all companies to participate and give back to the community.

If you’re not familiar, STEM in the Park is a RTF program that facilitates STEM outreach and mentoring to underserved students in the area. The program is now serving as a consultant on Sigma Xi’s K–12 programming and American Scientist’s Pizza Lunches. Both Sigma Xi and STEM in the Park are partnering together to bring more awareness of the knowledge and experience that the Park has and break down the barriers to to the surrounding Triangle community. This is seen through multiple lenses as STEM in the Park promotes STEM mentoring and outreach throughout K-12 schools and youth serving organizations in the area. The community is also welcome to take part in monthly American Scientist’s Pizza Lunches that are focused on various topics in science, technology, engineering and math.  Networking between the public and STEM professionals is welcomed during the lunch discussions.

Additionally, Sigma Xi is hosting their Symposium on Atmospheric Chemistry, Climate, and Health and Student Research Conference in Raleigh on November 10 and 11th. . On Day 1, the conference includes presentations about the intersections between climate change, environmental health, and human health as well as a free Town Hall about Climate Change. On the second day November 11th, the Student Research Conference kicks off with poster presentations for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students as well as workshops and a networking event that will help students prepare for science careers.

Both of these programs and events highlight the blossoming relationship between RTF programs and Sigma Xi and their joint resolve to further connect science with the community at all age levels.
